Ancient and Auspicious: Cassia Essential Oil

by Lori Jacobsen

Cassia Essential Oil is a very special oil. In fact, it is one of the few spices and oils referenced in the Bible and is considered the “Fragrance of Christ.”

An ancient spice, it has a long history of being used ritualistically, cosmetically, and medicinally. It has been referenced in Ayurvedic practices and Chinese Medicine consistently for 5000 years. In Egypt, it was used as an embalming agent for pharaohs and in Israel in royal cosmetics and in ritual. Brought to Europe 2400 years ago, it was used to anoint priests and kings, and used to fragrance royal garments.

Cassia is an oil of hearth and healing. It’s a warming oil, which makes it of great use as an immunity and energy booster during the colder seasons or times of stress. It can help promote ease and joy through massage (heavy dilution necessary), aroma therapy and can be used in cooking for its sweet and spicy piquancy.

Similar to Cinnamon, with the same spicy-sweet aroma, but Cassia Essential Oil comes from the Cinnamonum Cassiae, a totally different plant. The oil is steam distilled from the bark of the shrub. Cassia’s top properties are as a Decongestant, Carminative, Detoxifier, Cardiotonic, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-fungal, antispasmodic.

*Cassia Essential Oil is hot and needs to be heavily diluted to prevent skin irritation. Not recommended to be used by lactating women.
