Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil or ‘Iliahi in Hawaiian, is rapidly becoming the most sought-after sandalwood in the world. The Hawaiian variety of sandalwood is exceptionally sweet, rich, and chemically superior in comparison to other sandalwood varieties.

This prized Sandalwood variety is ONLY grown and distilled on the Big Island of Hawaii, which happens to be our home. The Sandalwood forest is located on a family-owned and operated 2,800-acre farm, which is currently part of a reforestation project.

Until recently, Hawaiian Sandalwood had been unavailable for many decades due to over-harvesting of the trees. This eco-project facilitates an abundance of Hawaiian Sandalwood, such that it is no longer in danger of becoming extinct, and we are able to supply the essential oil, hydrosol, and many other Hawaiian Sandalwood products worldwide.

History of Hawaiian Sandalwood

Dating back to 1797, Hawaiian Kings and Queens traded sandalwood worldwide. By 1811, King Kamehameha monopolized the Sandalwood trade, which enabled trade with the Western world. King Kamehameha used his Sandalwood trading powers to purchase the artillery required to unify the Hawaiian Islands.

After King Kamehameha’s death, his son and successor King Kamehameha II, fell into tremendous debt with Sandalwood traders. By 1826, American traders began demanding payment towards the large debts owed by the king and chiefs. In order to repay the debt, the first Hawaiian law was implemented, a Sandalwood tax. Every man and woman was required to harvest a determined amount of Sandalwood to be given to the king.

The astounding amounts of Sandalwood being harvested exhausted the forests causing the wood quality to degenerate. Since the forests were being ravaged, prices became higher and quality decreased. By 1830, the Hawaiian Sandalwood trade had collapsed leaving Hawaii stripped of its precious Sandalwood for almost 200 years.
