Aloha! This is Hope Johnson, founder of Miracle Botanicals
One thing that makes Black Spruce Essential Oil so special, in addition to its wonderful therapeutic properties, is an aroma that’s pleasant to practically all people.
It’s derived from the needles of the majestic black spruce evergreen tree and imparts an aroma that’s fresh and piney. It’s somewhat similar to popular commercial air fresheners, but without the toxic chemicals.
So let’s take a look at some of the therapeutic properties and how you can incorporate this lovely essential oil in your life.
Supports Clear Breathing…
Black Spruce Essential Oil is recommended in aromatherapy to help open up respiratory passageways, relieve congestion, and relieve breathing problems such as bronchitis. For these reasons, it has traditionally been used in spas, saunas, and in massage oils.
One whiff of our Black Spruce Essential Oil and it will probably be readily apparent to most people why this oil is great for clearing congestion. It’s slightly camphoraceous, which makes it cooling and soothing, but it’s not overpowering and its aroma speaks to gentle purification and cleansing.
- Diffuser – Use a good quality diffuser, preferably a nebulizing diffuser, but a water-based one works too.
- Heat some water on your stove, remove the pot from the heat and inhale the vapors being careful not to touch the hot pot. You can drape a towel over your head and around the bowl to keep the steam from escaping.
- Inhale directly from the bottle – I like to remove the cap and put the cap under one nostril and the bottle under the other and then inhale deeply
- Make a chest rub! Combine Argan Oil or another one of our lovely carrier oils at up to 10% dilution and apply to your chest up to three times per day. A 10% dilution would be 6ml black spruce essential oil to 2oz of Argan Oil. For a 5% blend, you would cut the amount of essential oil in half.
Promotes Mental Clarity...
Black Spruce Essential Oil has an aroma that’s naturally uplifting. It’s known to help reduce anxiety and stress, and clear sadness and mental fatigue. Also, it is used for helping to clear negative emotions and allows feelings of peace and contentment to develop.
I think this is my favorite benefit of this particular essential oil. I just love the aroma so much, I could sniff it all day! I use it to feel energized, inspired and alive. It reminds me that stress, anxiety, sadness, and mental fatigue is part of a mental condition that’s only held in place by choice. The aroma of black spruce reminds me that I can choose again.
Black spruce is also known to strengthen and support the adrenal glands in times of stress and anxiety according to Dr. Kurt Schnabelt.

Relieves Muscle Aches
Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, black spruce is recommended for relieving post-exercise aches and pains in joints and muscles. Also, it is commonly used to relieve muscle pain due to inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
One friend of ours who is a massage therapist and natural healer here in lower Puna, on the Big Island of Hawai’i knows black spruce essential oil very well. He said it’s been one of the most effective remedies for muscle pain. After he got a whiff of our Black Spruce Essential Oil, he dropped about 20 drops in his hands and rubbed it all over his forearms. He said it’s very safe to apply just like that and he does it all the time.
However, since Black Spruce Essential Oil is an astringent and due to the known drying effects of astringent essential oils, I wouldn’t recommend doing that all the time. I mostly prefer the bath method or adding it to a carrier oil for a powerful massage experience.
- Use it in a warm bath. Add 5-10 drops to a cup of Epsom salts or any natural sea salt, whole milk, vodka or other clear alcohol and add it to a bath while it is filling up. The reason you don’t just add the drops directly to the bath water is that you want the essential oil to emulsify in the water and not just make little oil globs floating on the top of the water.
- Make a massage oil. Combine Argan Oil or another one of our lovely carrier oils at up to 10% dilution and apply to sore, tired and/or fatigued muscles. A 10% dilution would be 6ml black spruce essential oil to 2oz of Argan Oil. For a 5% blend, you would cut the amount of essential oil in half.
It’s been awesome sharing all of this information with you. I really appreciate this opportunity to communicate with you about this wonderful plant spirit!
