This warming winter bath recipe with essential oils is perfect for nights when the temperature dips down and you need to make your soul feel cozy.
We designed this recipe around two of our favorite oils: Frankincense Neglecta and Hawaiian Sandalwood. Both are deeply calming and smell incredible together. Add some orange, vanilla, and a touch of cardamom, and you've got yourself the perfect winter evening.
The Recipe
You'll Need:
- 4 drops Frankincense Neglecta Essential Oil
- 3 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil
- 2 drops Orange Essential Oil (for a sweeter blend, substitute Sweet Orange Essential Oil)
- 1 drop Cardamom Essential Oil
- 1 tablespoon carrier oil (I like Argan Oil)
- Optional: 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream
- Optional: If you like an extra-sweet blend, try adding 1 drop of our Vanilla CO2 Extract.
How to Make It:
- Mix all the essential oils into your carrier oil in a small bowl.
- If you want a milk bath, whisk the oil blend into the milk or cream.
- Fill your tub with warm water.
- Once you're in, add the blend and swirl it around.
- Soak for 20-30 minutes and enjoy.
Essential Oil Benefits
Frankincense Neglecta is a special variety of frankincense that is known to be more grounding than other types. This species is also known to facilitate the type of introspection that we are naturally drawn to during the dark winter months. This frankincense helps you actually relax instead of mentally reviewing your to-do list while you're supposed to be unwinding. You can read more about this rare and unique species of frankincense in our blog post, Frankincense Neglecta: A Rare African Treasure.
Hawaiian Sandalwood is warm, woody, and comforting. This oil is prized for its ability to promote meditative states and reduce stress. It is also a root chakra balancer, helping us to connect to our roots, which is very appropriate for the winter months. When the above-ground world has dropped its leaves and gone dormant for the season, our roots remain active and strong, recalibrating slowly in the dark. For me, Hawaiian Sandalwood also adds a little touch of the campfire or hearth to our blend, which is exactly the type of energy my spirit craves when it's dark and cold out. You can learn more about the benefits and history of this oil in our blog post, Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil: Benefits, History, and Sustainable Origins.
Orange adds brightness without being overpowering. This essential oil can uplift the spirits and circulate stagnant energy. Orange also serves as a little reminder that the sunshine you might be missing will return. Let the contrast help you enjoy this moment.
Cardamom gives just a hint of warmth without any of the skin irritation that ginger or cinnamon can cause in the bath. This oil is emotionally stimulating, often reducing feelings of depression, weakness, or nervous exhaustion. Cardamom adds confidence and clarity to this blend.
Vanilla CO2 brings sweetness and that cozy feeling, like you're wrapped in your favorite sweater. If you want some extra sweetness in your bath, be sure to include this oil.
Together, they smell like a winter evening should feel.
Optional: Make It a Ritual
If you want to turn this into more than just a bath, light a candle before you get in.
As you settle into the water, take a few deep breaths and consciously let go of whatever you've been carrying around all day. The stress, the to-do lists, other people's energy.
You don't have to make it complicated. The point is just to be present for a few minutes. Winter is a season for slowing down and tending to aspects of our inner world that often get neglected or forgotten.

FAQs
Will this essential oil blend really warm the body?
The addition of Cardamom Co2 is known to be gently stimulating to the body, while still beings safe enough for the bath. (Oils like Ginger or Cinnamon Bark are also considered to be warming essential oils, but they run the risk of causing skin irritation which is inappropriate for the bath since they may come into contact with sensitive areas.)
