The measure of a quality sandalwood essential oil is its concentration of alpha and beta santalol. Due to the high concentration of santalols present in Hawaiian Sandalwood essential oil, it's considered the most therapeutic sandalwood in the world.
Sandalwood oil has two primary, active chemical constituents, alpha-santalol and beta-santalol. Both are naturally occurring sesquiterpenes that are responsible for the the rich, potent, subtle aroma thats associated with sandalwood, as well as its therapeutic benefits.

Here are some of the benefits of santalols that "the science" has revealed thus far:
- Cancer Therapy (including skin cancer) - the antitumor and cancer-preventative properties of santalols cannot be ignored. According to Pub Med, regarding cancer cells "alpha-santalol have been shown to involve cell death induction through apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in various models"
- Viral Infections - A PubMed study found that ... β-santalol of sandalwood oil has shown inhibitory activity against influenza A/HK (H 3 N 2 ) virus by interfering the mRNA synthesis. In another study, α and β-santalol of sandalwood oil were observed to be effective against HPV (Human papillomavirus)
- Attentiveness and Mood - We don't need a study to know this...we can just take an inhalation and observe...but a study published in the international journal, Planta Medica, found that alpha-Santalol elicited higher ratings of attentiveness and mood than a placebo.
- Calming and Relaxing - A study published in the Journal of Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice found that patients who were receiving palliative care felt much more relaxed and less anxious when they received aromatherapy with sandalwood prior to receiving care, compared to patients who did not receive sandalwood.
- Anti-Inflammatory - According to a PubMed study, "Purified α-santalol and β-santalol equivalently suppressed production of five indicator cytokines/chemokines at concentrations proportional to the santalol concentrations of the oils.
- Anti-aging - According to at least one published study, α- and β-Santalols Delay Aging in Caenorhabditis elegans via preventing oxidative stress and protein aggregation.
