How to use
Diffuser
In the airStart with 3 to 5 drops in a water diffuser for a medium room, then add a drop at a time until it smells right to you. Run it about 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room a rest with fresh air moving. Because the oil stays in the air rather than on the body, a diffuser blend is not bound by the sun limit.
On the skin
TopicalBergamot is phototoxic, because the expressed peel oil holds bergapten, so keep it at or below 0.4% in any leave-on product and keep treated skin out of strong sun for at least a day. That works out to about 2 drops in 30 ml of carrier oil, well under a normal body dilution. Patch test on the inner forearm, wait a day, and never use it neat.
In the bath
In the waterStir 4 to 6 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or an unscented bath oil, then add it once the tub is full. A rinse-off bath is a wash-off use, so it is not held to the 0.4% leave-on limit that skin products are. Oil and water do not mix, so the carrier is what lets the drops reach skin diluted, not neat.

Yes, bergamot is phototoxic, since the oil holds the furanocoumarin bergapten. Distilled citrus oils lose bergapten and are not phototoxic, but this pressed oil keeps it. On skin, hold bergamot to 0.4% or less in a leave-on product, and stay out of strong sunlight for a full day afterward. In a rinse-off bath or a diffuser it never stays on skin, so the limit does not apply.
The difference between bergamot and bergamot FCF is that FCF is the bergapten-free, furanocoumarin-free form, made by further processing so it is no longer phototoxic.
