Description

Mugwort is a widely grown herb native to temperate Europe, Africa, and Asia. It belongs to the same family of plants as wormwood, and also goes by the names Felon's Herb and Sailor's Tobacco.

Like wormwood, it has a long history of being used for flavoring and for medicinal purposes, particularly for pain relief, treatment of fever, and as a diuretic. Mugwort Essential Oil contains the fragrant compounds that give Mugwort its characteristic scent, and it also contains moderate amounts of thujone, a powerful psychoactive substance.

For this reason, therapeutic use of Mugwort Essential Oil requires particular care, and prolonged use of Mugwort Essential Oil should be avoided.

Mugwort also has a long history of mythical use in Europe, particularly for divination and psychic protection. It is also believe that the name "mugwort" may stem from its early use as a flavoring for beer, before hops became the standard brewing herb for the mug.

In Nepal, Mugwort is often used as an offering for the gods, or to cleanse ones' space by sweeping the area with it, or by hanging a bundle of it outside of the home.

The dried leaves of the plant are smoked or dunk as a tea to promote lucid dreaming in many parts of the world.

NOTE: Due to its moderate thujone content, Mugwort Essential Oil should not be used on children, during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding.

Benefits

Specific Benefits of Mugwort Essential Oil

Uterine Health & Regulating Menstrual Cycle

Mugwort Essential Oil can help to make the menstrual cycle more regular and promote a healthy uterus by encouraging the production of hormones that encourage healthy uterine function. This function is used to ease many of the unpleasant symptoms associated with menstruation and PMS, including pain, nausea, fatigue, bloating, and headache. Studies have shown that this can delay signs of aging in women.

Reduce Fatigue

Soldiers in the Roman Legion were known to put fresh Mugwort leaves in their sandals during long marches to prevent fatigue on their long journey. Try inhaling some Mugwort Essential Oil when you are getting tired for a little boost of energy. Mugwort will stimulate your nerves when you are tired, and calm your nerves in cases of shock.

Whole-Body Tonic

Mugwort Essential Oil has been used as a tonic for the whole body, acting primarily by balancing and detoxifying the liver and kidneys, and maintaining the proper discharge of hormones. Mugwort can also be used to ease digestive issues.

Nervine

One of the unique things about Mugwort is that it will calm and soothe the nerves in case of shock, anxiety, or even seizures -- but will also stimulate the nerves when you are tired or fatigued. Mugwort has been used to treat epilepsy and hysteria, but can also give you the energy and stamina to put some pep in your step when necessary.

Insect Repellent

Mugwort Essential Oil is an effective natural insect repellent. A few drops of the oil is sufficient to drive away mosquitoes, gnats, flies, and other pests. Planting this herb can also help to keep aphids and other undesirable insects from taking over your garden.
