Description
Our Star Anise Essential Oil is distilled from the fruit and seeds of the Illicium Verum tree, which is an evergreen that is native to Southeast Asia. Despite its name, this fruit is not related to Anise (Pimpinella Anisum). However, both Anise and Star Anise contain anethole which give these spices their distinctive flavor. Many people will get these two species confused for each other -- they have similar names, properties, and aromas.
Star Anise has a rich history of use in Indian, Indonesian, and Chinese cuisines and medicines, due to its many therapeutic benefits and distinct flavor and aroma. It is one of the ingredients in the "five spice" cooking blend. This plant's fruit and seeds have been used for immune support, digestive aide, and in certain liqueur flavors. (This is not the same species as Japanese Star Anise, which is toxic and used as an incense.)
In tradition folk medicine, Star Anise has been used to relieve constipation, flatulence, and other digestive issues. It can also be used for muscle spasms and joint pain. In Japan, Anise is chewed after meals to aide digestion and freshen breath.
In some spiritual traditions, Star Anise is considered a "dream herb", and is thought to increase psychic clarity and protect the user from harmful entities and nightmares.
Note: Possible skin sensitivity. 1-2% dilution in carrier oil is recommended for topical application.
