Sandalwood Hawaiian Essential Oil (Iliahi) - Organic (Santalum Paniculatum)

Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil is rapidly becoming one of the most sought after Sandalwood Essential Oils. The Hawaiian variety is exceptionally sweet and rich in comparison to other Sandalwood varieties.

Our Organic Hawaiian Sandalwood is grown and distilled on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil is sourced from a family owned and operated 2,800 acre farm, which is currently part of the Hawaiian Sandalwood forest restoration. 

For every Sandalwood tree that is harvested, 25 more are planted in its place. This type of farming allows for a renewable source of this wondrous Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil.

Until recently, Hawaiian Sandalwood had been unavailable for roughly 200 years due to over-harvesting of the trees. This eco-project will provide Hawaiian Sandalwood to our beautiful Big Island for many years to come.

Skincare

Hawaiian Sandalwood essential oil is prized for its effects in promoting smooth and healthy skin. Santalol, a major chemical compenent in Hawaiian Sandalwood, relaxes tension on the surface of the skin and softens the skin. 

Thanks to the presence of santalols coupled with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, this oil is well known for its effectiveness in reducing wrinkles, scars, and blemishes.

Uplifting

Used to enhance the mood, focus the mind, and create a feeling of calm. As a result, it is one of the most common essential oils used to aid meditation and spiritual practice. 

Relaxant and sedative

Recommended by aromatherapists to relax nerves and muscles. Because of this, it is used as a remedy for painful spasms, cramps, and aches. 

Aphrodisiac

Sandalwood essential oils are well known as aphrodisiacs, especially in men. They help relax nervous tension and increase blood flow to the genitals. (This works by inhalation and transfer through the skin. Do not put essential oils on the genitals unless they are diluted to 2% or less)

Cancer Therapy

According to a review on Pubmed.gov, "the antitumour and cancer preventive properties of alpha-santalol have been shown to involve cell death induction through apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in various cancer models"

Hydration: Hawaiian Sandalwood oil deeply moisturizes skin, creating a barrier to prevent water loss. It softens and smooths, benefiting dry skin types and promoting a supple complexion.

Note that sandalwood is one essential oil that is often applied without any carrier oil. It's a more fatty (non-astringent) oil, which is especially suitable for direct application.

Hawaiian sandalwood also does well in dilution and blended with other oils. It's considered a fixative and will help stabilize the aroma and integrity of other essential oils.

Blends well with: Cedarwood, Chamomile (Roman), Clary Sage, Frankincense, Geranium, Helichrysum, Jasmine, Lavender, Mandarin, Neroli, Patchouli, Rose, Vetiver, Ylang Ylang

Medicinal Properties of alpha-santalol a naturally occurring constituent of sandalwood oil: review

Miracle Skin Serum And Tonic: 

• 1 oz. Rose Hip Seed Oil
• 4 drops Agarwood Essential Oil
• 4 drops Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil 
• 4 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
• 4 drops Cape Chamomile Essential Oil

Mix the oils together and apply to clear, dry skin.

Hawaiian Sandalwood has a unique history. It was on the verge of extinction until a few decades ago, and I for one am so glad for the reforestation project that brought it back.

Up until the late 1700's, sandalwood trees that grew on Hawaii Island were used by the natives for waterproofing and scenting clothing, making musical instruments and tools, and for treating dandruff, lice, skin conditions, and sexually transmitted diseases.

But once King Kamehameha conquered the islands in 1791, he realized the value of Hawaiian Sandalwood as a trade commodity.

Kamehameha taxed the people of Hawaii to the point where they had to extract sandalwood trees from the mountains in order to pay the king's tax.

Apparently, trading sandalwood trees allowed Kamehameha to pursue his obsession with acquiring guns, ships, and other traded goods.

By around 1825 the sandalwood population on Hawaii was so decimated that Hawaiian Sandalwood was nearly impossible to come by for around 200 years.

That was until recent decades, when a reforestation project brought back the production of Hawaiian Sandalwood in a sustainable way. 

When I visited the Hawaiian Sandalwood forest farm some years back, I learned that only dead and dying sandalwood trees are harvested for their wood and essential oils.

It brings joy to my being to know that these wonderfully fragrant tress get to live out their lives on the slopes of Mauna Loa before they are transformed into useful objects, and the most delicious sandalwood oil I've ever experienced.

I prefer Hawaiian Sandalwood on its own, or blended with a small amount of Magnolia. I have also added it to many of our blends, which I adore, and which I will show you below.

I usually apply the essential oil directly onto my skin. I don't sense the need to dilute this one as it doesn't feel astringent at all. The oil feels velvety, and its effects are subtle yet powerful in a way that you only need a little bit, but if you used it liberally, it would not be overpowering.
