Roman chamomile, the sweet apple one
Roman Chamomile, Anthemis Nobilis from Oregon, is a clear pale-yellow oil that smells sweet, fresh and apple-like. On the nose it runs soft and round, sweet without a sharp edge. It's the gentlest scent of the four.
German chamomile, the deep blue one
German Chamomile, Matricaria Chamomilla from Egypt, is the dark blue oil of the set, sweet and fruity with a little smoke and a herbaceous edge. Its blue comes from chamazulene, which forms as the flowers are steam distilled. It carries the boldest color and the heaviest scent of the four.
Cape chamomile, the rare cobalt one
Cape Chamomile, Eriocephalus Punctulatus from South Africa, is a clear cobalt-blue oil, with berries and apples over a sweet, floral and clean base. It's the rare one of the four, and its scent sits closer to soft fruit than to a herb.
Wild chamomile, the green Moroccan one
Wild Chamomile, Ormenis Mixta from Morocco, is a green-brown oil that smells sweet, fresh, herbaceous and apple-like. Also called Moroccan chamomile, it's the outlier of the set, greener and drier than the other three. It rounds out the box with a scent all its own.
How to use
In a diffuser
In the airStart with 3 to 5 drops of any of the four in a water diffuser for a medium room. Run it for 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room the same break with a little fresh air moving through. All four chamomiles diffuse the same way, so you can switch between them or blend a couple of drops together.
Diluted on the skin
On the skinDilute before use, since 6 to 18 drops in 30 ml of a carrier oil gives a 1 to 3 percent blend that suits most body uses. Patch test a small spot on the inner forearm and wait a day, and if you react to daisies, ragweed, chrysanthemums or marigolds, go slowly. We always dilute these oils and keep them off skin straight from the bottle.
