Five scents that stage a Christmas morning
5 benefits of Christmas Morning
Christmas Tree, the tree note
The Christmas Tree oil blends fir, cypress, juniper and spruce, and it smells piney, woody and fresh. It's the note of a tree just brought indoors, green and resinous. It sits low, under the brighter scents around it.
Peppermint, the candy-cane brightness
The Peppermint here is Mentha piperita, a single oil, fresh, minty and herbaceous, with a cool bite. It's the candy-cane note of the morning, sharp and bright against the rounder scents. A little of it carries a long way.
Cinnamon Bun, the bakery note
Cinnamon Bun is a warm, uplifting blend that smells just like cinnamon buns straight from the oven. It's the bakery note of the morning, all cinnamon, butter and vanilla. Of the five, it carries the fullest, most dessert-like scent.
Cocoa, the cup of hot chocolate
Cocoa is Theobroma cacao, a solvent-extracted absolute, and it smells chocolaty, sweet, warm and exotic. It's the note of hot chocolate on a cold Christmas morning, deep and full. It sits beside the coffee as the richest scent in the set.
Coffee, the morning cup
Coffee is Coffea arabica, a CO2 extract, and it smells like a strong, rich, dark cup of coffee. It's the note that says the pot is on, the last scent in the Christmas-morning picture. Like cocoa it's thick and deeply colored, the heavier and darker of the two.
How to use
In the air
Aromatic useStart with 3 to 5 drops in a water diffuser for a medium room, then add a drop at a time until it smells right to you. Run it for 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room a break for the same time with fresh air moving. The cocoa and coffee oils are dark and can stain, so wipe it out afterward and keep the drops off pale surfaces.
On the skin
The gentler oils onlyThis set is made for the air, and only the milder oils suit the skin, always diluted low and patch tested first. The Cinnamon Bun oil is one to keep out of skincare, because it holds cinnamon bark and other strong ingredients, and these oils stay out of the bath, where drops float and sting. Peppermint is high in menthol, so keep it well away from little faces.
In the sun
If it reaches skinThe Cinnamon Bun oil carries bergamot, which is phototoxic, so if any of it reaches your skin, keep the amount low and out of the sun on that skin. Though the cocoa, coffee and cinnamon here smell like breakfast, these are aromatic oils, not food, so do not take them for internal use.
