Frankincense frereana is the raw resin form, burned on a charcoal disc the way frankincense has scented temples, churches and mosques for centuries. Set a small tear on a lit coal and it melts into a fragrant smoke. This is incense in its oldest form, the tears themselves rather than a finished oil.
A clean, low-gum burn
Frereana holds little of the water-soluble gum that makes ordinary frankincense char, so it melts on the coal into a light, fragrant smoke. Gum-heavy grades scorch and smell acrid as they burn, but frereana does not. That clean burn is what sets this grade apart.

How to use
On charcoal
In the censerTo burn frereana, light a self-igniting charcoal disc with tongs in a heat-proof censer lined with about an inch of sand, then wait for the gray-white ash before adding a small pea-sized tear. Less is more, since too much resin floods and smothers the coal. Keep a window open while it burns, never leave the lit charcoal on its own, and let the coal cool fully before you clear it away.
Low-smoke burner
Gentler heatFor less smoke, warm crushed frereana on a tealight or electric resin burner. Set it over a little water or a base oil such as jojoba, so the resin releases its fragrance as vapor rather than heavy smoke. Never let the bowl run dry above a lit candle.
Infused in oil
For balms and salvesTo make a fragrant oil, warm the tears gently in a carrier oil until the aromatic oils dissolve out, since frereana dissolves in oil and not in water. Keep the resin out of reach of children and pets while you work.

Method. Crush the resins into small, even pieces and keep them in a sealed jar. Add a pinch to a prepared charcoal a little at a time, and build the scent slowly rather than all at once.

Burning frankincense frereana resin smells fresh and resinous, with a bright, almost citrus lift that settles into a warm, lightly sweet amber-woody depth. The bright opening comes first, and the warm wood stays behind as the tear burns down. The smoke is cleaner and softer than the one heavier frankincense grades give off.
The difference between the resin and the essential oil is their form, the resin being the raw aromatic tears and the oil being hydrodistilled from those same tears. Burn the resin on charcoal as incense, or use the oil in a diffuser, or diluted in a carrier for a blend. The hydrosol is the water that comes off that same distillation.
No, frankincense frereana is not among the frankincense species confirmed to contain significant boswellic acids. Only Boswellia sacra, Boswellia serrata and Boswellia papyrifera are. Frereana is nearly all resin and volatile oil, which is part of why it burns so cleanly. That is a fact about its chemistry and nothing more.
Frankincense smells burnt when its water-soluble gum scorches on the coal instead of melting. Gum-heavy grades hold a lot of that gum, so they char and turn acrid. Frereana carries little of it, so it burns clean rather than charring.
To store frankincense resin, keep it cool, dry and out of direct sunlight in a sealed glass container. Stored that way, the tears hold their fragrance for a long time, since warmth and damp are what dull a resin. A closed jar in a cupboard is all it needs.
