Somalian Myrrh, the dry and creamy one
Somalian Myrrh is Commiphora myrrha, steam distilled, from Somalia, a thick yellow-amber oil that reads dry, creamy and resinous. It sits heaviest and slowest of the three, the classic myrrh scent.
CO2 Extracted Myrrh, the warm and smoky one
CO2 Extracted Myrrh is Commiphora myrrha again, this one drawn out of the resin by carbon dioxide rather than steam and certified organic. Golden yellow and medium-thick, a Horn of Africa oil, it reads resinous, warm and smoky, a fuller and rounder turn on the same resin.
Sweet Myrrh, the balsamic outlier
Sweet Myrrh, also called opoponax, is Commiphora erythraea, a bright yellow, medium oil from a Horn of Africa harvest, steam distilled. It reads balsamic, bittersweet, earthy and honey-like, a rare myrrh that smells nothing like the other two.
How to use
In a diffuser
In the airStart with 3 to 5 drops of any of the three in a water diffuser for a medium room, then add one drop at a time until it smells right to you. Run it for 30 to 60 minutes, then rest the room for the same stretch with a little fresh air moving. All three diffuse the same way, so switch between them or blend a couple of drops together.
On the skin
On the skinDilute before any skin use, since 6 to 18 drops in 30 ml of a carrier oil gives the 1 to 3 percent range that suits most body blends. Keep the face lower, nearer 3 to 6 drops in that same 30 ml, and patch test a small spot on the inner forearm a day ahead. We always dilute these myrrhs first and keep them off skin straight from the bottle.
Handling the resin oils
HandlingThese three are thick, slow resin oils, so warm the bottle in your hand before you count drops and let each one fall in its own time. A cold myrrh pours slowly, which is the resin doing its thing, not a fault in the oil.
