The earthy patchouli that anchors it
The patchouli gives Vintage and Spruce its earthy, warm depth with a balsamic edge, the part that stays on skin and in the air once the spruce has lifted away. A vintage Pogostemon cablin, it works as the anchor of the blend and holds the lighter spruce in place. Patchouli has anchored perfumes for centuries and still turns up in incense.
The fresh lift from the spruce
The spruce brings the bright, fresh, sweet opening of Vintage and Spruce, a resinous, coniferous freshness off the needles of Picea mariana from Canada. It's the brighter, quicker half of the blend, and its clean edge is what you meet first. In the wear it arrives ahead of the patchouli and then gives way to the wood.
How the two halves settle together
Where spruce and patchouli meet, Vintage and Spruce reads earthy and resinous with a bright, coniferous edge. The lift of the spruce and the earthy depth of the patchouli are built to belong together, not sit side by side. The result wears as one warm, woody whole.

How to use
Diffuser
In the airAdd 3 to 5 drops of Vintage and Spruce to a water diffuser for a medium room, then adjust a drop at a time until the scent sits where you like it. Run it for 30 to 60 minutes at a time, then rest the room for as long with some fresh air moving through. The patchouli carries, so you'll need less than you'd expect.
On the skin
TopicalDilute Vintage and Spruce to 1 to 3 percent before it goes on skin, which is about 12 drops in 30 ml of a carrier such as jojoba for a 2 percent body oil. Keep to about 6 drops in 30 ml on the face, the lighter end of the range. Patch test on the inner forearm and give it a day before wider use. We do not use this blend neat, and it is not for internal use.
Storage
Keep it freshKeep Vintage and Spruce somewhere cool and dark, and use it while it is fresh. The black-spruce part is the lighter, more reactive half and can oxidize over time, which is the spruce's caution rather than the patchouli's, so a cool, dark shelf keeps the blend at its best. Close the cap tightly between uses.
Bath
In the waterStir 4 to 6 drops of Vintage and Spruce into a tablespoon of carrier oil first, then add that to a full tub. Oil and water won't mix on their own, so the carrier is what carries the drops onto your skin diluted instead of neat. Swirl the water through and step in.

Method. Add the drops to your diffuser and run it for 30 to 60 minutes. The bergamot brightens the opening and the silver fir sharpens the fresh edge, while Vintage and Spruce holds the warm, earthy depth underneath.
Method. Combine the drops with the jojoba in a small bottle and roll it between your palms to warm it through. Smooth it over the shoulders and the back of the neck, where the wood stays close instead of filling a room. Keep it capped and use it within a few months.
Method. Stir the drops into the jojoba in a 10 ml roll-on bottle and cap it. The vetiver draws out the patchouli's depth without covering the spruce. Roll a little onto the wrists and let it settle before you dress.
