Spikenard oil comes from a small flowering plant, locally known as jatamansi, which grows wild at the 10,000-foot elevation of the Himalayas. True spikenard essential oil, produced from the rhizome of the jatamansi plant, is blue to blue-green right after distillation, thereafter gradually changing into a golden amber color. In ancient Egypt, spikenard was used as a luxurious aromatic, including for anointing Cleopatra and King Tut’s tomb. In India, Spikenard has been in use for Ayurvedic practices in hair preparations to calm the mind and prevent hair loss. Spikenard is also referenced in the Bible as the oil used by Mary to anoint Jesus’ feet.
