I have to confess that the smell of spearmint carries a very special memory for me. It reminds me of the sugar-free dental gum that my Grandmother used to carry in her purse. Whenever I felt the desire for a special treat, I would dig through her bag to uncover that little tin-foil-wrapped treasure. I remember that her purse always smelled so amazing!
As I have grown older, I have carried that fondness for the smell of Spearmint, and I love to use Spearmint Essential Oil by itself as a natural perfume. I often receive compliments that I smell “good,” or “refreshing,” but every now and then, someone else will say, “You smell like my Grandma!”
That might seem like a weird compliment to some, but to me, it translates as, “You smell like a fond memory of a wise, caring, loving woman.” And maybe there was a little bit more intuitive wisdom as to why Grandma carried spearmint gum in her purse than simply offering a tasty treat for her grandchildren. If I were able to ask her about it today she would probably say something in a Southern accent like, “When I was a girl, Mommy and Daddy used to grow spearmint in the garden and we used it as medicine.”

Freshen Your Breath
Now that I’m a “big kid” with more refined taste, I can’t say that sugar-free dental gum sounds like a tasty treat anymore! That doesn’t mean I can’t find another way to freshen my breath naturally with the taste of Spearmint. Not only does it smell super yummy, but Spearmint Essential Oil is also known to subdue bacteria and the abundance of other micro-organisms that may be causing bad breath in the first place.
Stimulate Your Energy
With an aroma that is minty, sweet, earthy, and overall, very invigorating, use Spearmint Essential Oil to perk up your energy field. Perfect for those moments when you want to call in extra focus, clarity, and pep.
Invigorate Your Skin
Not only can Spearmint Essential Oil freshen your breath and your energy, but also your skin! Here, those antiseptic and antimicrobial benefits come back into play by removing impurities from the skin. It is also used to offer relief to itchiness, dryness, insect bites, athletes foot, and more.
Relieve Headaches
Mint of all varieties has long been used to help heal headaches and migraines. For those who are more sensitive, Spearmint Essential Oil may be the perfect variety, as it is milder than comparatives like Peppermint Essential Oil. Spearmint Essential Oil is the modern aromatherapist’s go-to for resolving such discomfort. For a minty temple massage, use a few drops on the tips of your fingers and massage the temples during a quiet, relaxing moment.
Resolve Digestive Upset
And now, we bring it full circle with that age-old, tried and true use for a high-frequency plant medicine such as Spearmint! Just as this herb is used to resolve digestive upset, so too is Spearmint Essential Oil used as a popular remedy for stomach aches, nausea, vomiting, gas, etc. This oil is an antispasmodic, meaning that it relieves cramps and other muscular spasms, even in the intestines. It is also often used to keep the digestive tract clean and balanced in the case of healing stomach ulcers or other internal wounds.
