How the two woods read
Worn or diffused, the oud carries a dark, musty depth, and the Hawaiian sandalwood softens it with a sweet, creamy warmth. The sandalwood is the gentler of the two woods, the oud the deeper, and together they stay close and last. It reads as the two woods themselves, not a scent built to imitate them.
A wood shaped by a fungus
The oud in this attar is resin-formed wood, not ordinary timber. A Phaeoacremonium fungus infects a standing Aquilaria tree, and the tree fills the wood with dark, fragrant resin in answer. Only a small share of wild trees ever form it, which is why real oud has always been scarce. That resin is what the still draws the scent from.
How to use
Worn as a scent
Worn as a scentDab a trace of the neat oil on the skin as a personal fragrance, the way an attar has always been worn; it's oil-based, with no alcohol. Because the oil is thick and slow to pour, one touch is plenty. Worn on the skin like this, the oil reads as a fragrance.
On the skin in a blend
TopicalFor skin, blend the oil into a carrier at 1 to 3 percent for the body, about 6 drops in 15 ml of a carrier such as jojoba. Keep it lower on the face, and patch test on the inner forearm a day before wider use. For skin care we always dilute it first, never neat.
In a diffuser
In the airIn a water diffuser, a single drop is enough for a room, since the oil is strong and thick. Run the diffuser for 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room fresh air before the next session. Add a second drop only if you want the scent fuller.

Method. Add the attar of oud to the jojoba in a 10 ml roller and cap it, then roll it between your palms to blend. Roll a little onto the wrists and the throat and let it settle.
Method. Combine the attar of oud, rose and Hawaiian sandalwood in the jojoba in a small bottle and shake it well. Smooth a little over the arms and shoulders, and keep the bottle capped between uses.
Method. Drop the attar of oud, frankincense and myrrh into a water diffuser and run it for a short session. Let the room air out between sessions.
Technical information for this batch
At 48.19% this batch is dominated by (Z)alpha-Santalol — the larger santalol isomer, a sesquiterpene alcohol and sandalwood's main constituent, carrying its long, soft, woody base. (Z)beta-santalol sits at 15.11%. The oil is orange color, thick and viscous consistency, and it reads as a base note in a blend.
