Refresh, a blend of sweet basil, lemon and spearmint
6 benefits of Refresh Essential Oil Blend
The green, herbaceous basil
Ocimum basilicum, the basil in this blend, brings a sweet, spicy and herbaceous green scent. It's the milder linalool chemotype, and it sits under the brighter lemon and spearmint as the green, herbaceous part of the blend.
The clean citrus of the lemon
Citrus limonum, the cold-pressed lemon, is the clean, citrusy and slightly sour part of the blend. This is the brightest of the three oils and the first thing you notice, a fresh squeeze of lemon over the green basil and cool mint.
The cool, minty edge
Mentha spicata, the spearmint, adds a cool, minty sweetness to the Refresh blend. It stays cool and sweet rather than sharp, and it keeps the blend crisp and green alongside the clean lemon.
How the three read together
Set side by side, the lemon, spearmint and basil read as one clean, green wash of citrus over mint. The blend opens bright and stays light, then fades fairly quickly rather than holding all day.
How the blend is made
Our family composes and blends the Refresh blend in small numbers, and every oil in it is checked by an outside lab for synthetics and adulteration. We make it the way we make all of our oils.
A fresh scent for the day
This blend is an everyday diffuser and room scent, the kind of bright, clean smell that suits a summer day or the kitchen. In the diffuser it freshens the air with citrus, mint and a green edge of basil. It's a blend to keep a room feeling bright and fresh, nothing you have to fuss over.
How to use
Diffuser
In the airAdd 3 to 5 drops of the Refresh blend to a water diffuser for a medium room, then a drop at a time until the scent is right. Run it for 30 to 60 minutes, then rest the room for the same time with fresh air moving.
On the skin
DilutedDilute the Refresh blend to about 1 percent before it goes on the skin, which is 6 drops in 30 ml of a carrier oil like jojoba. Patch test a little on the inner forearm and wait a day before wider use. This blend contains cold-pressed lemon, which can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so after you apply it keep that skin out of sunlight and off sunbeds for about 12 hours. We do not use this blend neat, and it stays out of reach of children.
In the bath
DispersedStir the Refresh blend into a tablespoon of carrier oil or an unscented bath oil first, then add it once the tub is full. Oil and water do not mix, so the carrier lets the drops spread through the water instead of floating on top. Swirl the water and get in.

Method. The bergamot and green mandarin add more bright citrus over the blend's own lemon and mint. Add the drops to a diffuser filled with water and run it as usual.
Method. Combine the witch hazel and the drops in a spray bottle, add the water, and shake well. Mist it into the air to freshen a room, and shake again before each use since the oil and water separate. Keep it off polished wood and delicate surfaces.
Method. Stir the drops into the jojoba, then swirl it through a full tub before you get in. The carrier carries the oil into the bath rather than leaving it neat on top. Rinse the tub after, since oils leave a film.
