This was my first experience with valerian essential oil, and as I always do when an oil arrives in the mail, I unscrewed the cap and inhaled deeply. The smell was definitely unexpected--more on that in a moment--but the most surprising thing was that the concentrated snort of valerian was enough to make me feel lightheaded for just a moment. The sedative effects of this oil are very pronounced, at least they are for me. Properly diluted it works well as a gentle sleep aid, but exercise a little caution in it's use until you know how it will effect you. As for the scent, it's...interesting. I like it, as do about half the people who've smelled it; the other half find the it distinctly unpleasant. I think what they don't like is the bottom note, a sort of skunky, earthy smell. The top and most noticeable scent is almost like wine or brandy, a kind of fruity spirit smell, but as that fades what's left in the nose is the skunky earth smell. Again, proper dilution mellows the scent, but even as someone who generally likes it I doubt I'll making valerian cologne any time soon. This isn't and oil that is going to be beloved for its smell, but as a natural, gentle sedative it's outstanding.
So gentle & relaxing as well as delicious smelling. Sleep will be almost like living in a bakery.
I’ve used Valerian before and you never know what it’s going to smell like. This was musky, spicy, a little resinous - and deeper than the Vetiver I have. It is strong and a little goes a long way but a little is all that is needed. Blended with Ylang Ylang and a bit of Chamomile, this will take you to dreamland 💗
The best oil for sleep, bar none. Blends best with florals and spices. Tends to overpower…use sparingly!
I can't think of one essential oil that I have received from Miricle Botanicals that I haven't loved.
