Yarrow Essential Oil (Achillea Millefolium)

6 benefits of Yarrow Essential Oil
The blue that proves it real
The deep blue of yarrow oil is chamazulene, formed in the still when matricin meets heat, and a bottle that is only pale or straw-gold isn't a genuine blue yarrow. Color is the quickest way to read a good one. An azulene blue comes from the plant itself, never from a dye.
Green and fresh in the diffuser
In a diffuser, yarrow gives a room a green, fresh scent, more like a bed of herbs than a bloom. It carries without turning heavy, so a few drops reach across a room. This is the simplest way to meet the oil, and the scent is the whole point.
How the scent moves over time
Yarrow opens green and sharp, then settles over a few minutes into a softer, drier wood underneath. The bright green edge goes first and a quiet warmth stays behind. On a paper strip you can watch it shift, garden at the start and dry wood by the end.
What perfumers do with it
Perfumers use blue yarrow where they want a green, fresh lift that is neither citrus nor floral. It sits beneath woods and over softer botanicals without taking over, and a drop or two turns a whole accord toward the garden. That fresh, green character is why it earns a place in a blend.
Blended into skincare and massage oil
Yarrow goes into skincare and massage blends the way other precious oils do, always worked into a carrier oil first and never used on its own. People are drawn to the color and to the clean, green scent it lends a facial oil or a body blend. Here it gives its scent and its blue, and it makes no promise beyond that.
The plant they called woundwort
Long before it was distilled, yarrow went by soldier's woundwort and knight's milfoil, names from the battlefield and the old herbals. We keep them here as history, not as anything the oil is sold to do. What it carries now is a scent, and that is reason enough to keep yarrow around.
How to use
Diffuser
In the airStart with 3 to 5 drops in a water diffuser for a medium room, then add a drop at a time until the scent sits right. Yarrow carries well, so you need less than you think. Diffuse for 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room the same length off again, with some fresh air moving through.
On the skin
TopicalDilute yarrow to 1 to 2 percent before it touches skin, which is about 6 to 12 drops in 30 ml of a carrier oil. On the face, keep it to 3 to 6 drops in 30 ml. Patch test a little on the inner forearm and wait a day before wider use. Yarrow carries a small amount of thujone, so keep it away from small children, the elderly and anyone with epilepsy, and avoid it in pregnancy and nursing. We don't use this oil neat, and it's not for internal use.
Bath
In the waterStir 4 to 6 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or an unscented bath oil, then add it once the tub is full. Oil and water don't mix on their own, so without the carrier the drops would sit on the surface, and mixing them in first is what gets them to skin diluted, not neat. Swirl the water and step in.

Method. Combine all three in the diffuser and let it run 30 to 60 minutes. The bergamot brightens the opening and the cedarwood adds a soft, dry wood, so the yarrow's green sits between them. Run it, then let the room clear before the next round.

Yarrow essential oil smells green and herbaceous, more cut herb than flower, fresh and almost sharp to start with a soft sweetness under it. The blue color makes people expect something soft and floral, and it isn't. It sits closer to fresh-cut herbs than to a garden bouquet.
Yarrow essential oil is blue because steam distillation turns matricin, a colorless compound held in the flowers, into deep-blue chamazulene under heat. The fresh flowers are not blue themselves; the color is made in the still. A pale or gold yarrow oil carries almost none of it.
The difference between blue yarrow, blue tansy and blue chamomile is the plant behind each, not the blue they share. All three turn blue during steam distillation, yet each comes from a different species, and ours is Achillea millefolium. They smell and behave differently, so one is not a substitute for another.
Yes, yarrow essential oil is safe on skin once it's diluted, at about 1 to 2 percent in a carrier oil, and it's never used neat. Patch test a small area first and keep the rate lower on the face. If you have reactive or sensitive skin, or you're pregnant or nursing, ask your clinician before adding any essential oil. It is not one for young children either.

Yes, there is thujone in yarrow essential oil, but only a small amount, the plant ketone behind the pregnancy, children and epilepsy cautions. It's not a thujone-heavy oil like wormwood, so in most cases the guidance is careful use in a carrier rather than avoidance. That small amount is part of the plant's own chemistry, not a flaw.
