This is an easy orange for beginners new to essential oils, the familiar smell of fresh fruit with nothing to get used to. It behaves the way you expect a citrus to, bright and simple to blend, so it forgives a heavy hand better than a sharper oil. It makes a good first citrus for a small kit.
The citrus you can wear by day
Blood orange is not phototoxic, so a daytime blend is safe in the sun. Bergamot and bitter orange carry that warning; this sweet orange does not. Worked into a carrier oil, it makes an easy citrus for a roll-on or a body oil you wear by day.
The bright lift over deeper oils

How to use
Diffuser
In the airStart with 3 to 5 drops in a water diffuser for a medium room, then add a drop at a time until the scent is where you want it. Blood orange is light and bright, so it carries without much. Run the diffuser for 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room a break for the same time with fresh air moving.
On the skin
Diluted, patch-testedDilute blood orange oil to 1 to 2 percent before it goes on the skin, which is 6 to 12 drops in 30 ml of a carrier oil. Keep the face lower, at 3 to 6 drops per 30 ml. Because sweet orange is not one of the phototoxic citrus oils, a daytime blend needs no sun caution; bergamot and bitter orange are the ones that do. Patch test on the inner forearm and wait a day before wider use, and we never use this oil neat. Keep it out of reach of children.
Around the home
Freshening the airTo freshen a room, run a few drops of blood orange in a diffuser, or mist a simple water-and-witch-hazel room spray. Keep the bottle cool, dark and tightly capped, and away from open flame, so it holds its bright scent. This is for the scent of a room, not a surface cleaner.
