The Christmas-tree scent of fir needle is why it sits in so many winter blends, a bright conifer smell that reads as a just-cut fir. Run it through the fall and the holidays for the smell of the season indoors. It layers well with orange and a little spice for a warmer room.
A clean conifer note for a deodorant blend
As a crisp conifer note, fir needle gives a natural deodorant or a room spray a clean, outdoors smell. Work a little into an unscented stick or a spray for the feel of fresh forest air. Keep the amount light, since the oil is strong.

How to use
Diffuser
In the airAdd 3 to 5 drops of fir needle to a water diffuser for a medium room, then top up a drop at a time until the air smells right. Run it 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room a rest and some fresh air before the next round.
On the skin
On the skinDilute fir needle to 1 to 2 percent before it meets skin, which is 6 to 12 drops in 30 ml of a carrier oil. Go lower on the face and in a deodorant blend, nearer 3 to 7 drops in 30 ml. Patch test on the inner forearm and wait a day before wider use, and we never use this oil neat. Keep it out of reach of children.
Storage
StorageStore fir needle cool, dark and tightly closed, and use it while it's fresh. As a Pinaceae needle oil it's rich in monoterpenes that slowly oxidize in air, and oxidized conifer oil can irritate skin, so a fresh, well-kept bottle is the safe one.
Bath
BathStir 4 to 6 drops of fir needle into a tablespoon of carrier oil or unscented bath oil, then add it once the tub is full. Oil and water don't mix, so the carrier is what carries the drops to skin diluted, not neat. Swirl the water and step in.

Method. Add the drops to a diffuser and run it 30 to 60 minutes. Sweet orange lifts the opening and black spruce adds a sweeter green, with fir needle holding the forest scent underneath.
Method. Mix the drops into the jojoba in a small bottle and roll it between your palms before use. Smooth it over the shoulders and forearms, where the cedarwood adds warmth beneath the fir needle. Cap it and store it away from sunlight.
Method. Stir the drops into the tablespoon of jojoba, then swirl it through a full tub before you get in. The cedarwood rounds out the fir needle for a quiet, woody-forest scent. Rinse the tub afterward, since oils leave a film.
