Harvesting Practices

Pine resin, also known as pine sap, is harvested from various species of pine trees, ours comes from the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) growing wild in Portugal. The process of harvesting pine resin is called tapping or resin extraction. Here's an overview of the pine resin extraction method.

  1. Selection of trees: Pine trees suitable for tapping are usually at least 9-12 years old and have a trunk diameter of about 30 centimeters (12 inches) or more.

  2. Incision creation: The bark of the tree is carefully removed to expose the cambium layer, which is the part of the tree responsible for resin production. This process is called "wounding" or "scoring." The incision is typically made in a V-shape or with horizontal cuts, and the depth and length of the cut are determined based on the tree species and the desired resin yield.

  3. Resin collection: The resin flows out of the incision and is collected in a container attached to the tree below the flow.

  4. Maintenance: The wound may be re-opened or widened periodically to stimulate continuous resin flow, usually every couple of weeks during the tapping season. Care must be taken not to damage the tree excessively, as this can compromise its health and future resin production.

  5. Harvesting: Once the containers are full or the tapping season ends, the resin is collected and transported to the distillation equipment. The resin is then steam distilled to create essential oils.

  6. Tree recovery: After the tapping season, the tree is allowed to rest and recover. The incision will eventually heal, and the tree can be tapped again in the future, usually after 2-3 years or more, depending on the tree's health.

It is essential to follow sustainable harvesting practices to ensure the long-term health of the pine trees and the surrounding ecosystem. Over-tapping or improper tapping techniques can stress the tree and make it susceptible to disease or environmental threats.

Duuuuude yummmmm

Super duper stoked on the free gift of pine turpentine and all of the magic and power it has to offer. Mahalo MB!!! Wow how amazing . Would have never have thunk to order this one, but now realize it’s a must have. The scent and power of the scent is like no other. I’m blown away each time. I smell it a lot and am researching it. Diffusing it inside clears the energy right away. Also recently used as final ingredient of a homemade powerful cleaning agent, unbelievable results. Wow. Amaze balls.
