The classic barbershop scent
Bay rum is the barbershop and aftershave scent, drawn straight from the distilled leaf rather than mixed from fragrance. A few drops carry that old-fashioned men's cologne character into soap, a shave oil or a room. It's warm and dry, the smell of a barber's chair.
A warm room from the diffuser
Bay rum fills a room from the diffuser with a warm, woody-spice scent that reads as masculine without turning sharp. A few drops suit a workspace or a room at home. It carries well, so start with a little and build from there.
A base for soap and blends
Soapmakers and blenders use bay rum for its warm, phenolic depth, the same character that makes it a barbershop standby. Add it at trace when you make soap, or into a shave oil kept well in a carrier. Because bay is potent, keep any leave-on skin contact light.

Genuine bay rum is the pure leaf oil, not a synthetic fragrance oil wearing the name. You can smell the difference. A true leaf oil is rounder and warmer than a flat, sweet copy, and anyone who has been sold an imitation knows the gap at once.
How to use
Diffuser
In the airStart with 3 to 5 drops of bay rum in a water diffuser for a medium room, then add a drop at a time until it smells right to you. Bay carries well, so keep the count low. Run the diffuser for 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room a break with fresh air moving through.
On the skin
TopicalDilute bay rum to about 1 percent before it touches skin, which is about 6 drops in 30 ml of a carrier oil such as jojoba, for a beard or body oil. Patch test on the inner arm and wait a day, and keep it off broken or reactive skin. We do not use this oil neat, and it stays out of reach of children.
In soap and blends
In blendsAdd bay rum to soap, a beard oil or a body oil at the maker's usual rate, working it in at the trace stage in cold-process soap. Keep anything that stays on skin in a base oil and well diluted. A small amount goes far, since bay is a strong leaf oil.

Method. Combine the oils in a 30 ml bottle of jojoba and cap it, then roll it between your palms to warm it. Smooth a few drops over the jaw and neck after a shave.
Method. Add the drops to a water diffuser and run a short session. The lime lifts the top and the cedarwood settles underneath, so the bay rum holds the warm center of the blend.
Method. Diffuse the drops, or disperse them in the water of a room mister, for a warm, spiced room. The allspice deepens the bay rum and the sweet orange keeps it bright. Run it in short bursts rather than all day.
