A lighter floral for the diffuser
In a diffuser, clary sage fills a room with a sweet, soft floral that stays gentle rather than sharp, the lighter reading this Kashmir oil is known for. A few drops carry a small room without taking it over. The scent sits in the background of a space rather than announcing itself.
A supporting note and a fixative
Clary sage works as a supporting note and a tenacious fixative, which is why perfumers have long used it in eau de cologne and musk-type bases. It holds a blend together and sits well beside labdanum, citrus and florals. A drop or two rounds out a composition without stepping in front of it.
A partner in a skin blend
In a body or bath oil, clary sage adds a soft, sweet warmth once it's blended into a carrier. It plays well with lavender, geranium and the woods, filling out a blend without a sharp edge. The oil goes into the carrier first, never onto skin on its own.
The muscatel and clear-eye story
Clary sage carries two old names, muscatel sage and clear-eye. In sixteenth-century Germany the herb was steeped in Rhine wines to make Muscatel, and the Romans scented their bath houses with it long before that. We keep this as history, and nothing more.
A rare Kashmir clary sage
Clary sage from Kashmir is uncommon; the clary sage you usually meet is French or Bulgarian. This one is distilled from Salvia sclarea grown in Kashmir, and it stands apart for its lighter, sweeter character. One of the harder-to-find oils we keep in the range.
The lighter, sweeter clary sage
This Kashmir oil runs lighter and sweeter than the herbaceous clary sage of the Mediterranean, a difference that comes down to its linalool-forward chemistry. Where older material can read sharp and tea-like, this one stays soft and floral. It suits people who find the usual bottle too green.
How to use
Diffuser
In the airStart with 3 to 5 drops in a water diffuser for a medium room, then add a drop at a time until it smells right to you. Diffuse for 30 to 60 minutes, then give the room a rest with some fresh air. Clary sage is light, so a little carries a long way.
On the skin
TopicalDilute clary sage to 1 to 2 percent before it touches skin, which is about 6 to 12 drops in 30 ml of a carrier oil. Keep to 3 to 6 drops per 30 ml on the face. Clary sage is gentle on skin but can bother sensitive skin in some people, and its linalool grows more reactive as it ages, so keep the bottle sealed and cool. We do not use this oil neat, and we keep it out of reach of children.
In the bath
In the waterStir 4 to 6 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or an unscented bath oil, then add it once the tub is full. Oil and water do not mix, so the carrier is what lets the drops reach skin diluted rather than neat. Swirl the water and step in.

The difference between clary sage and true sage is the species and the chemistry. Clary sage is Salvia sclarea, distilled from its flowering tops and dominated by the gentle ester linalyl acetate, with only a trace of thujone. True sage is Salvia officinalis, a thujone-rich, camphorous oil from the leaves, and our true sage reads deep, spicy and peppery where clary sage stays sweet and floral. Because true sage is high in thujone, its label carries a caution to avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding and to keep it under one percent on skin.
