Blue chamomile essential oil benefits are well-documented. For centuries, people from various cultures have used the oil as a safe and effective medicine. Blue Chamomile Oil, also known as German Chamomile essential oil benefits are discussed in this post along with several ways in which the oil may be used.

The color of steam-distilled Blue Chamomile essential oil is dark blue which comes from the chemical component chamazulene. Chamazulene is a product of matricine breakdown during the steam distillation process. Matricine is the chemical component responsible for the anti-inflammatory benefits of Blue Chamomile essential oil.

We offer two varieties of Blue Chamomile / German Chamomile. As discussed above, the two names are synonymous. We call one of ours "Blue Chamomile" and one of them "German Chamomile" just to make it easier to differentiate between the two.

We've carried the steam-distilled variety, the one we call "German Chamomile essential oil", for many years. It's been a favorite of our customers with its dark blue color, soft aroma, and potent yet gentle medicinal properties. It has a deeper blue color even though our new "Blue Chamomile essential oil" contains more chamazulene.

We just added the Co2-extracted Blue Chamomile Essential Oil a few weeks before this writing. We added it because...wow! The aroma is one of the most beautiful aromas we've ever encountered. We like the aroma even better than our original German Chamomile essential oil, and we like that one a lot!

The higher concentration of chamazulene indicates more anti-inflammatory benefits in the Co2 version than in the steam-distilled variety, and even more than Blue Tansy, which also has a very deep, dark blue color.

The reason Co2 extracted Blue Chamomile is less blue than steam-distilled Blue Chamomiles, is that no heat is used in the extraction process. Heat is required to convert matricine to chamazulene.

Blue Chamomile Essential Oil Benefits

Anti-depressant
Like Roman Chamomile (the one commonly used as tea), Blue Chamomile has anti-depressant properties and is said to ease tension, and anxiety, and induces sleep. The oil also has powerful anti-microbial and anti-biotic properties, and thus it's used for wound healing.

Blue Chamomile essential oil is especially beneficial for those with nervous and tension issues. The oil is also known to reduce symptoms of depression and ADHD. It can be diffused to increase concentration or may be used in a body oil to enhance its benefits.

Anti-inflammatory
German Chamomile Essential Oil contains powerful anti-inflammatory compounds that are known to help reduce pain, redness, and swelling due to inflammation. In addition, German Chamomile Essential Oil appears to have antihistamine effects that can help decrease allergy symptoms.

Anti-bacterial
German Chamomile may also be used on the skin to help avoid and remedy bacterial diseases in the mouth and gums caused by chemotherapy or radiation.

Skincare
The antioxidants in chamomile are excellent for skin as well as the rest of the body. They help prevent oxidative stress, which makes the skin look older. This is because oxidative stress destroys collagen, one of the key anti-aging proteins in your skin.

In addition to its protective abilities, chamomile has also shown a potential ability to improve wound healing, which suggests it may even be able to boost collagen synthesis.

How to Use Blue Chamomile Oil

Neat: Place a drop or two directly onto clean and intact skin. A couple drops on the wrists, shoulders, temples or neck imparts a beautiful aroma and is an effective remedy for stress and nervous depression. To use as deodorant, place a drop or two on each armpit. Note: May be too concentrated to be used undiluted on facial skin.

Blended with Carrier: Use 15-30 drops per 1 TBL of carrier oil, and massage over any area where you would like for healing to occur. This dilution is ideal for general skin on the body. For more sensitive and mature skin, start out by using 6-12 drops per 1 TBL dilution.

Bath: Place 8 drops into 3 handfuls of bath salt and disperse, or add 8 drops to vodka or whole milk, then add to the bath

Diffusor: Follow diffuser manufacturer's instructions, but typically add about 8 drops.

Room Deodorizer: Add 15 drops per 2oz distilled water and spray as desired.
